in the name of god amen the 30.4.1620 I Robt Ames of Markshall in the county of Essex yeoman being weak in body but of good and perfect remembrance thanks be given to almighty god do ordain and make this my last will and testament in manner and form following revoking all other (torn) the hands of almighty (torn) jesus christ item I (torn) in Marshall and for (torn) stables and back sides other unto (torn) own occupation to have and to hold the (torn) me and after my decease and after my wife's said term expired I do give the said land (torn) with all and singular the appurtenances unto Dan Ames my son and to his heirs forever item I give unto my said wife during her natural life all my freehold lands and tenements being in messuage with all my woods and underwoods there being known by the name of Mill Fields or any other name whatsoever now in the occupation of Robt Belfield and his assigns and after the decease of my said wife I do give and bequeath the said lands tenements woods and underwoods unto Eliz Ames my grandchild daughter of Robt Ames deceased when she shall accomplish the age of 21yr and my mind is that if Dorothy my wife do depart this life before such time as the said Eliz Ames shall accomplish the said age of 21yr that then I will that Thos Fanning my son in law do receive and take the rents and profits of the said lands and tenements woods and underwoods until such time as the said Eliz Ammes shall accomplish the said age of 21yr item I will that Thos Fanning my son in law do receive and take the rents and profits of my two houses at Stisted with the rents and profits of all the yards orchards back sides during the natural life of Dorothie my wife and out of the said rents and profits of the said two tenements to pay unto Eliz Ames late wife of my son Robt Ames deceased the sum of 4li of lawful money of England at the two usual feasts of the year by even and equal portions towards the bringing up and maintenance of Eliz Ames my grandchild and after the decease of Dorothie my wife I give the said two tenements with all and singular their appurtenances unto Dan Ames my son and to his heirs forever upon condition that the said Dan Ames my son do pay unto eight of his youngest children that he now hath 8li that is to every one 20s apiece at their several ages of 21yr item I give unto Dan Ames my son the sum of 40li of lawful money of England to be paid unto him within one year next after my decease item I give unto Dan Ames my grandchild and unto Jone Ames my grandchild either of them 10li of lawful money of England to be paid unto them within two years next after my decease or their several ages of 21yr at the choice of my executors item I give unto Thos Gray my godson and unto Amie Gray my goddaughter either of them 5s to be paid unto them within one year next after my decease item I give to the poor the sum of 40s to be distributed unto them at the discretion of my executors at my burial the residue of my goods and chattels household stuff corn cattle and ready money whatsoever I give to my executors for the performance of this my last will and testament item I do ordain and appoint Dorothie my wife and Thos Fanning my son in law to be my executors of this my last will and testament item I do appoint my good friend Wm Stephens overseer of this my last will and do give him for his pains 20s in witness whereof I have set my hand and seal the date above written signed sealed and acknowledged as his last will in the presence of Nich Cowell Jn Humfrie mark Robt Ames
