item to this court came Nich Peirce and Alice Peirce his wife and humbly sought licence from the lord of the aforesaid manor to let and grant their customary tenement called Hynes and Clotes lying and being within the precincts of this court to Robt Rookes of Earls Colne yeoman his heirs and assigns for and during a term of four years from the feast day of michaelmas next following upon such conditions and agreements as after this shall be concluded between them the aforesaid Nich Peirce and Alice Peirce on the one part and the aforesaid Robt Rookes on the other part to whom the lord of the manor granted licence to let the aforesaid land in the aforesaid manner and form and upon this the aforesaid Nich and Alice Peirce in open court and Alice herself solely and secretly examined by the aforesaid steward according to the custom of the aforesaid manor surrendered into the hands of the lord by the aforesaid steward the aforesaid customary lands to the use and behoof of the aforesaid Robt Rookes and his assigns from the feast of michaelmas next following for and during the term of four years upon certain conditions and agreements between them the aforesaid Nich and Alice Peirce and the aforesaid Robt Rookes concluded and a greed who the same said Robt present here in court sought admittance to the aforesaid land in the manner and aforesaid form and the lord of the manor by the aforesaid steward granted thereof seisin to him to have and to hold the aforesaid lands with appurtenances in the aforesaid manner and form and he gave to the lord for his fine and made fealty and was admitted thereof tenant for and during the aforesaid term
