14.4.34Eliz1 to certain Theo Adams and Thos Butler gents made in the rolls of chancery lawfully enrolled and moreover there of record remain in which amongst others so continue in manner following the queen to all to whom etc greeting wheresoever in above before mentioned deed our father by his letters patent under the great seal of England made bearing date at Westminster 22.7.28Hen8 gave and granted to Jn then earl of Oxford by name of Jn de Vere knight of the honourable order of the garter earl of Oxford and great chamberlain and the heirs of his body letters patent amongst others of the site foundation bounds and precinct of the house and late priory or monastery of the blessed virgin mary and st john the evangelist of Earls Colne in the county of Essex and the house and late priory of Earls Colne aforesaid and all the church belfry cemetery to the same late priory or monastery also all the messuages houses edifices yards granges dovecotes orchards apple orchards gardens ponds fishponds lands and ground so within the enclosure and bounds of the same late house and priory or monastery except that the enclosure and bounds of the same late house and priory or monastery to the same late priory or monastery belonging or appertaining also the manor of Colne alias Colne Priory in Earls Colne and manor of Barwick alias Barwike in White Colne and Ingesthorpe with all their appurtenances in the county aforesaid also the rectory church and chapel of Earls Colne Great Bently Walter Belchampe Messing White Colne in the said county of Essex and the rectory parish church of Wickham with appurtenances in the county of Cambridge belonging to the same late priory or monastery also the patronage of the rectory church vicarage and chapelry of Earls Colne White Colne Messing Great Bently and Walter Belchamp and the right to nominate to the same in the same county of Essex also the patronage nomination and gift of the rectory or parish church of Wickham aforesaid and the right of nomination of the same in the said county of Cambridge and also all and singular the glebe tithes so aforesaid which belong to the same rectory vicarage chapel and other appurtenances belonging or reputed also all that annuity or annuities pensions and portions underwritten viz annual pension of 20s raised from the rectory of church of Stansted and one annuity of 10s raised from the rectory and church of Hedingham Sible and one annual pension 14s4d raised from the church of Mapelsted Magna and one annuity or annual pension of 6s raised of the rectory or church of Aldham and one annual pension 8s raised from the rectory and church of Bures ad Montem alias Mount Bures in the county of Essex also one pension 33s4d raised of the church and rectory of Lavenham and one pension 20s raised of the church of Aldham in the county of Suffolk also all that portion tithes raised and gathered of and in the rectories and churches of Bures ad Montem alias Mount Bures Stansted Hedingham Sible Maplestede Magna and Maplestede Parva in the said county of Essex and of the rectories and churches vicarages and chapels of Lavenham and Aldham in the said county of Suffolk also all Maplestede Parva Ingesthorpe and elsewhere wherever in the said county of Essex and in Wickham in the said county of Cambridge and elsewhere wherever in the said county of Cambridge and in Lavenham and Aldham in the said county of Suffolk and in wheresoever other county or place within the kingdom of England of where or of which Robt Abel late prior of the same late priory before this had with the site of the same late house or priory aforesaid except all the manor of Creppinge with appurtenances in the said county of Suffolk and the rectory parish church of Edwarston with its rights and appurtenances with whatsoever in the same county of Suffolk and one mill called Borefflete Mill with appurtenances in Great Bentley in the said county of Essex also with all the lands tenements rents or lands glebe tithes portions and hereditaments whatsoever with appurtenances in Creppinge and Edwarston aforesaid in the said county of Suffolk and in Eythorpe Rodinge in the aforesaid county of Essex to which said late priory or monastery they belong or reputed and also all that site foundation bounds and precinct of the late house or priory of the blessed mary and st james and holy cross of Castle Hedingham in the said county of Essex and the house and late priory of Hedingham aforesaid and all the church belfry and cemetery to the same late priory also all the messuages houses edifices yards granges dovecotes orchards gardens ponds fishponds lands and ground so within the enclosures and bounds of the same late priory except that the enclosure and bounds of the said late priory and to the same late priory belonging or appertaining and the rectory parish church of Hedingham Castle and Gosfield with appurtenances late appropriated to the same late priory or monastery of Hedingham aforesaid in the said county of Essex and the patronage nomination of the church rectory and vicarage of Castle Hedingham and Gosfield aforesaid in the said county of Essex also all and singular the manors messuages lands tenements mills meadows feedings pastures woods underwoods assarts water ponds fishponds fishings commons rents annuities fees farm reversions or knight's fee wards marriages reliefs escheats rectories chapelries patronage of church vicarages chapels and chantries glebe portions tithes oblations mortuaries fairs markets road tolls services liberties franchises warrens by whatsoever names they are known or the same elsewhere are known to which said late priory of Hedingham Castle late belong or appertain or of which any prioress of the said priory before this time was seised in right of the said priory or monastery aforesaid situate lying and being in the town fields parish or hamlet of Hedingham Castle Hedingham Sible Gosfeld Yeldham Magna Yeldham Parva and elsewhere wheresoever in the said county of Essex and in whatsoever other county or place within the kingdom of England as by the said letters patent last above recited amongst others fully and clearly appear whereas also Edw now earl of Oxford son and heir of Jn late earl of Oxford son and heir of the aforesaid Jn late earl of Oxford in the letters patent of aforesaid late prince henry the eighth of the manor site priory rectory advowson lands tenements hereditaments and the rest of the premises by the aforesaid letters patent bearing date the aforesaid 22.7.28Hen8 aforesaid the before mentioned Jn earl of Oxford the grandfather did give grant during his life by fine with proclamation in court of law of common pleas before the justice the master of record lately relieved and discharged in the same by Edw made given and granted for us our heirs and lawful successors of all the same manor site rectory advowson land tenements hereditaments and premises amongst others as by a certain fine in full clearly may appear whereof at any time in tenor following in these words this is the final agreement made in the court of the queen at Westminster easter 30Eliz1 before Edw land 20a meadow 20a pasture 10a woodland and 8li rent with appurtenances in Wickham also of the patronage and lawful nomination to the church of Wickham in the said county of Cambridge and of the rectories of Lavenham and Aldham with appurtenances and of one messuage two gardens two orchards 10 0a land 10a meadow 20a pasture 10a woodland 20a open fields and h eathland common pasture and for all else and 5li rent with appurtenances in Lavenham and Aldham also for all and every tithes of sheaves grain and hay whatsoever grown coming or to grow in Lavenham and Aldham in the county of Suffolk whence a plea of covenant taken and made between us the aforementioned queen and the aforesaid earl in the court aforesaid viz that the aforesaid earl recognises the aforesaid site house priory manors tenements fishings warrens common pasture rents rectory chapel tithes portions pensions oblations knight's fees wards marriages reliefs goods and chattels of felons and outlaws escheats markets tolls liberties franchises and views of frankpledge with appurtenances and patronage aforesaid against the aforesaid earl and his heirs forever and by the aforesaid recognizance remittance quitclaim warrant fine and agreement the same lady queen gave the aforesaid earl 4000li sterling and also upon certain other letters patent under the great seal of England made bearing date at Westminster 8.6.30Eliz1 in which is contained amongst others that we by the same letters patent give and grant the aforementioned Edw now earl of Oxford by the name of beloved and faithful kinsman Edw de Veer earl of Oxford viscount Bulbeck great chamberlain of England and lord of Badlesmere and Scales all that site foundation bounds and precinct to the house and late priory or monastery of the blessed virgin mary and st john the evangelist of Colne Comitis alias Earls Colne in the county of Essex on the authority of parliament a little while ago suppressed or dissolved which late was of the gift or grant of the same earl and all that lordship late priory of Colne Comitis aforesaid and all the church belfry and cemetery of the same late priory or monastery which of course was late had of the gift or grant of the aforesaid earl also all those messuages houses edifices barns granges dovecotes apple orchards gardens fishponds lands only so within the enclosure and bounds of the same late house and priory or monastery except that the enclosure and bounds of the same late house and priory or monastery to the same late priory or monastery belonging or appertaining which late were of the gift or grant of the said earl also all that manor of Colne alias Colne Priory in Earls Colne which was late of the gift or grant from the aforesaid earl and all those rectories churches and chapels of Earls Colne Great Bently Walter Belchampe alias Beauchampe Walter alias Water Belchampe Messinge and White Colne in the aforesaid county of Essex aforesaid which late were of the gift or grant of the aforesaid earl and all that rectory and parish church of Wickham with appurtenances in the county of Cambridge also all that patronage nomination and donation to the rectory church vicarage and chapel of Earls Colne White Colne Messinge Great Bentley Walter Belchampe and the right of nomination to the same in the said county of Essex which were late of the gift or grant of the aforesaid earl and all that patronage nomination and gift of the vicarage or parish church of Wickham aforesaid and the right of nomination to the same in the said county of Cambridge which late were of the gift or grant of the aforesaid earl and also all and singular the glebe tithes so aforesaid which belong or appertain to the same rectory vicarage and chapel or ecclesiastical appurtenances otherwise belonging or reputed also all the other manors messuages lands tenements meadows pastures woods underwoods mills assarts waters fishponds fishings commons rents annuities pensions portions knights whatsoever sort nature or kind by whatsoever name adjudged or otherwise may be adjudged situate lying or being in the town fields parish or hamlet of Earls Colne White Colne Colne Engayne and Colne Wake Pedmershe Lammershe Bures ad Montem Walter Belchampe Bentley Magna Messinge Stansted Hedingham Sibley Maplested Magna Maplested Parva and Inglesthorpe and elsewhere wherever in the said county of Essex and also in Wickham in the said county of Cambridge and in Lavenham and Aldham in the county of Suffolk which were late of the gift or grant of the aforesaid earl and which belong to the aforesaid late house and priory or monastery of the blessed virgin mary and st john the evangelist of Colne Comitis alias Earls Colne belonging or appertaining and all the foundation site bounds and precinct to the late house and priory of the blessed mary st james and the holy cross of Hedingham Castle in the said county of Essex and all that house or priory of Hedingham aforesaid which late was of the gift or grant of the aforesaid earl and all the church belfry and cemetery to the same late priory also all that messuage houses edifices yards granges dovecotes gardens orchards ponds fishponds lands and ground so within the enclosure and bounds of the same late priory except that the enclosure and bounds of the same late priory and to the same late priory belonging or pertaining which were late of the gift or grant of the aforesaid earl all that rectory parish church of Hedingham Castle and Gosfield with appurtenances to the same late priory or monastery of Hedingham aforesaid in the said county of Essex belonging which were late of the gift or grant of the aforesaid earl and all that patronage and nomination to the rectory and vicarage of Hedingham Castle and Gosfield aforesaid in the county of Essex which were late of the gift or grant of the aforesaid earl also all and singular those manors messuages lands tenements mills meadows pastures woods underwoods assarts waters ponds fishponds fishings commons rents annuities fees farm reversions or knights fees wards marriages reliefs escheats rectory chapel patronage of the church vicarage chapel and chantry glebe portions pensions tithes oblations obventions mortuaries fairs markets road tolls services liberties franchises warrens courts leet views of frankpledge and all that to the view of frankpledge belongs and other the hereditaments in law and forever whatsoever so belonging which at the time are composed of whatsoever sort nature or kind and by whatsoever names adjudged or the same elsewhere adjudged which were late of the gift or grant of the aforesaid earl and which belong to the said late priory of Hedingham Castle late belonging or pertaining which late were late of the gift or grant of the aforesaid earl of which any prioress to the said late priory before this time had in the right of said late priory or monastery aforesaid situate lying and being in the town fields parish or hamlet of Hedingham Castle Hedingham Sibley Gosfield Yeldham Magna Yeldham Parva and elsewhere in the said county of Essex and elsewhere whatsoever within the kingdom of England as fully and completely and in so ample a manner and form as it came to Mary Baynbrigge late prioress of the late priory of Hedingham Castle aforesaid or anyone of her predecessors in the right of the same late priory or monastery there held or enjoyed to have and to hold the aforesaid site church belfry court and precinct of the priory aforesaid and all and singular the aforesaid manors messuages lands tenements annuities pensions portions and the rest of all and singular the premises above expressed and specified with all and singular their appurtenances amongst others to the aforesaid Edw earl of Oxford and heirs of his body lawfully procreated and in default of such heirs of the body to the rightful kin of Jn de Veer deceased late earl of Oxford grandfather of the aforesaid now earl deceased lawfully procreated paying to our heirs and rightful successors for the aforesaid manor of Colne also Colne Priorie and the aforesaid rectory chapel and for all and singular the aforesaid manor messuages lands tenements and hereditaments and the rest of all and singular the premises with all and singular their appurtenances in Earls Colne White Colne Colne Engayne and Colne Wake aforesaid 66li to be received by the then bailiff for the time being to the feast of michaelmas and annunciation or within one month next following whenever feast of feasts there by equal portions of all the payments for all profits and demands to as to whosoever just as to our heirs or rightful successors just as demanded or claimed making payment for the same letters patent amongst others fully and clearly appears know that we for divers causes and considerations us specially moving and precipitates in concideration of good true and acceptable services to us before this made by our beloved and faithful mr Jn Norris knight also to this petition the same Jn Norris by reason of certain knowledge and free action in law we give and grant and by these presents for our heirs and rightful successors do give and grant to Theo Adams and Thos Butler of London gents and their heirs forever the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders whatsoever of the divers manors monasteries priories rectories granges chantries lands tenements meadows pastures tithes pensions portions patronage rightful nomination and the rest of the possession and hereditaments wheresoever above mentioned and specified and belonging there parcel dependant upon several grants aforesaid above mentioned either upon the same some way or other or upon any other grant or grants made of the premises or of any or of any there parcel and all the rents and the rest all the annuities profits wheresoever coming upon whatsoever gift or grant and upon whichever gift or grant of the premises or any other part or parcel of the premises we give besides and by these presents for our heirs and rightful successors to the aforesaid Theo Adams and Thos Butler and their heirs and assigns forever the reversions and reversions remainder and remainders of all the abovesaid houses manors monasteries priories rectories granges lands tenements meadows feedings pastures tithes pens ions patronage and rightful nomination and the rest of the possessions and hereditaments whatever above mentioned recited or specified and however there part and parcel except before excepted and all the woods underwoods and trees of in and upon the premises or any other there parcel growing and being and all the lands foundation and ground of same woodland underwood and trees and the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders of all and singular the houses edifices barns stables dovecotes yards orchards gardens lands tenements meadows feedings pastures and common waste open fields heathland moors marshes tithes oblations water courses fishings fishtraps ways services rents and services works rights to mill also farms knights fees wards marriages escheats ways amercements of courts leet views of frankpledge and leet belonging and profits and all that to the court leet and view of frankpledge and leet belongs or imposts to belong owed or to owe by bond and bonds with the same following and of the goods and chattels waifs extrahura deodand estover and common estover ship wrecks other free warrens liberties markets tolls customary tolls of stallage and all other the right jurisdiction free privilege profits commodities emoluments hereditaments whatsoever within the kingdom of England to the premises above by these presents previously granted or the same somewhere or other or elsewhere there parcel howsoever reputed belonging regarded occurring appertaining or as member part or parcel to the same aforesaid premises or of anything or anywhere else there parcel before this herein recognised demised located occupied accepted used and reputed as being except before excepted so fully freely and completely and in as ample a manner and form for and of any abbot abbess prior prioress or some other abbot abbess prior or prioress of the said late monastery or priory or of the aforementioned bishop of Lincoln or someone else or any other premises aforesaid or any there parcel before this or situate there being same premises or sometime there at any time had to hold or enjoy have held or enjoyed or to have to hold or enjoy or owe or owed and so fully freely and completely and in so ample manner and form accordingly as same all and singular the premises and anywhere or any their parcel or the rents and annuities profits of the same or elsewhere there parcel above expressed and specified at the hands of the master or at the hands of any other since the dissolution suppression or surrender of the said monastery priory hospital and chantry or of the same elsewhere or accomplished elsewhere by act of parliament or of any act of parliament or by escheat attaint forfeit or whatsoever other legal form title now in law come or to come or any there parcel come or to come owed and in hand of the master only being or to exist owing or to owe to have hold and enjoy the aforesaid reversion and reversions remainder and remainders to all the aforesaid manors rectories messuages lands and tenements tithes hundredths meadows feedings pastures woods underwoods hereditaments and the rest of all and singular the premises above expressed and specified with all and singular their rightful members and appurtenances except before excepted to the before mentioned Theo Adams and Thos Butler and their heirs and assigns forever to hold the aforesaid manor of Colne Comitis alias Colne Priory and all the aforesaid manor rectory chapel messuages lands tenements hereditaments and the rest of the premises in Earls Colne White Colne Colne Engayne and Colne Wake aforesaid and all and singular the rest of the premises to the said late monastery or priory of Colne Comitis alias Earls Colne as complete belonging or appertaining of us our heirs and rightful successors in chief by one fortieth part of knights fee and paying us our heirs and rightful successors for the aforesaid manor of Colne alias Colne Priorie and for all and singular the aforesaid manors rectories chapels messuages lands tenements and hereditaments and the rest of the premises in Earls Colne White Colne Colne Engayne and Colne Wake aforesaid and for all and singular the rest of the premises to the said late monastery or priory of Colne Comitis alias Earls Colne as complete belonging and appertaining 66li to receive by the hands of the bailiff at that time being to the feast of michaelmas and annunciation or within one month next following whenever at the feast of feasts there by equal portions paid and the last will and grant for us our heirs and rightful successors by these presents to the aforementioned Theo Adams and Thos Butler their heirs and assigns that these letters patent or inrollments of the same were after this to farm to the value good sufficient and effective in law towards and against us our heirs and rightful successors so in all courts of law elsewhere within and without this kingdom of England as by any other confirmation licence or toleration of us our heirs or rightful successors forever by the aforementioned Theo Adams and Thos Butler or the heirs executors administrators and assigns or of the same some other or any other procured or obtained notwithstanding any nomination or agreement recited or not recited aforesaid several manors rectories messuages lands tenements and the rest of all and singular the premises above recited and specified or sometime there parcel and notwithstanding not finding office or inquisition of the premises or any other then parcel by which title made owed before the completion letters patent and notwithstanding misquoting or not reciting any demised or granted premises or of any other there parcel before this made so of record as not of record and notwithstanding that of the name of tenant farmer or occupant of the manor rectory hundreds lands tenements and the rest of the premises or elsewhere there parcel full and certain not to be made and notwithstanding any other defect of certainty or computation or declaration of the true annual value of the premises or of elsewhere there parcel or the annual rents reserved of in and upon the premises or of and upon any there parcel in these letters patent expressed and intended and notwithstanding any other defect in not naming or in misnaming elsewhere to hold farm or occupy the lands tenements and hereditaments aforesaid or of any other the premises or of elsewhere there parcel or in name or not in right name and nature sort kind quantity or quality to the premises or elsewhere there parcel and notwithstanding the statute edict in parliament of the lord henry late king of England the sixth rightful ancestor 18Hen6 or somewhere in the same statute contained or mentioned or some in other statute act or ordinance wherever before this made in some roll also and by these presents granted to the aforesaid Theo Adams and Thos Butler that by these letters patent under the great seal of England now given made and sealed and after fine or fees great or small of us in the hanaper or elsewhere to the right use wherever rendering paying or making to that express mention etc in witness whereof etc at Westminster 14.4.1592 by the queen herself we moreover enrol the letters patent aforesaid at length as before said at the request of our beloved Rich Harlakenden esq we did draw up an exemplification by these presents in witness whereof these letters were made patent witness me myself at Westminster 5.9.5Jas1 examined by Math Carew and Jn Tyndall clerks
