indenture 9.10.1697 witnesseth that Thos Piper and Jn Pratt churchwardens of Earls Colne and Jn Whistow and Jn Last overseers of the poor by and with the consent of justices of the peace whose names are subscribed have put and placed Joseph Cobbs a poor child of the said parish apprentice to Thos Pledger of the parish of St Giles in Colchester with him to dwell from this date until he is twenty four years aged now 14yrs during which term he serve his master faithfully etc and the said Thos Pledger covenants to instruct him in the art and mystery of a weaver and will give him food etc and keep the parishioners of Earls Colne indemnified from any cost and at the end of the term provide two suits of apparel for work day and holy days Thos Pledger Wm Mott Nath Lawrence justices of the peace no witnesses
