this indenture made the 25.6.1711 witnesseth that Isaac Potter and Jn Brewster churchwardens and Wm Chapman and Thos Baker overseers of the poor of the parish of Earls Colne also with the consent of two justices of the peace have placed and bound Jn Cobbs a poor friendless child as an apprentice to and with Thos Winch of the parish of St Mary in Colchester gardener and as an apprentice with him to dwell and serve from this day he Jn Cobbs being 16yrs old until he reach the age of twenty four years during which time he will faithfully serve his master etc and the master covenants to teach him the art or mystery of a gardener or what other occupation he now useth and keep him in food etc and at the end of the said term to give and deliver unto his said apprentice two decent suits one for working days and the other for holy days etc Thos Winch sealed and delivered the paper first stamped with two 6d stamps in the presence of Wm Smith Sam Burton justices of the peace J Sparrow Jn Cressener
