this indenture made 20.7.1715 witnesseth that Ambrose Stowers and Wm Peartree churchwardens and Thos Hale and Jn Eadey overseers of Earls Colne as also with the consent of two justices of the peace have placed Wm Green a poor child of the said parish aged 16yrs apprentice to Jn Whitley of Wivenhoe oyster dredger to dwell and serve from this date until he is aged twenty four years and during that term to serve faithfully etc and Jn Whitley covenants to instruct his apprentice in the art of oyster dredging and shall provide him with food and lodging and keep the parishioners indemnified from any costs or charges of the apprentice and at the end of the term to deliver him double apparel etc Jn Whitley signed and delivered in the presence of us the paper being first stamped with three 6d stamps Jn Pratt Sam Burton justices of the peace J Sparrow Jn Cressener
