this indenture made 16.1.1730 witnesseth that Jn Hatch and Ambrose Towers churchwardens and Thos Sewell and Jn May overseers of Earls Colne with the consent of justices of the peace have put and placed Wm Sad a poor child of the parish apprentice to Sam Smith of Great Coggeshall bay weaver with him to dwell until aged twenty four years (now aged 17years) during which time to serve his master etc and Sam Smith covenants to instruct him in the art of a bay weaver to lodge and feed him and to indemnify the parishioners and at the end of the term to provide him with double apparel etc Sam Smith witnesses mark Dan Cook Sam Burton justices of the peace Rich Androwes H Summers
