this indenture made the 16.2.1730 witnesseth that Jn Hatch and Ambrose Towers churchwardens and Thos Sewell and Jn May overseers of Earls Colne with the consent of two justices of the peace have put and placed Jas Springate a poor child of the said parish apprentice to Thos Lawrence of Great Coggeshall bay weaver with him to dwell from this day until he is twenty four years old (now aged 17years) during which time he shall serve his master etc and Thos Lawrence covenants to instruct him in the art of bay weaving and lodge and feed him and indemnify the parishioners from all charges and at the end of the term provide double apparel etc mark Thos Lawrence witnesses mark Wm Lawrance Sam Burton justices of the peace Ri Wale H Summers
