this indenture made 29.11.1736 witnesseth that mr Oliver Johnson and mr Jn Hatch churchwardens and Sam Smith and Thos King overseers of Earls Colne with the consent of justices of the peace have placed Joseph Chrismas a poor child of the parish apprentice to Thos Northey of Great Coggeshall bayweaver with him to dwell until aged twenty four years (now aged 17years) during which time he will serve his master etc and Thos Northey covenants to instruct him in the art of bayweaving and to lodge and feed him and indemnify the parishioners from any charges and at the end of the term to provide double apparel etc mark Thos Northey witnesses Thos Smith Sam Burton justices of the peace Robt Tweed Rich Wale
