this indenture made 22.11.1736 witnesseth that mr Oliver Johnson and mr Jn Hatch churchwardens and Sam Smith and Thos King overseers of Earls Colne with the consent of justices of the peace have placed Dan Green a poor child of the parish apprentice to Thos Smith of Great Coggeshall bayweaver with him to dwell from this day until the age of twenty four years (now aged 17years) during which time to serve his master etc and Thos Smith covenants to instruct him in the art of bayweaving and shall lodge and feed him and indemnify the parishioners from any charges etc and at the end of the term will supply double apparel etc Thos Smith witnesses Jn Leaper Sam Burton justices of the peace Rich Wale Robt Tweed
