this indenture made 15.11.1736 witnesseth that mr Oliver Johnson and mr Jn Hatch churchwardens and Sam Smith and Thos King overseers of Earls Colne with the consent of justices of the peace have put and placed Thos Moss a poor child of the parish apprentice to Thos Appleton of Great Coggeshall bayweaver and papper with him to dwell from this day until the age of twenty four years (now aged 17years) during which term he shall serve his master etc and Thos Appleton covenants to instruct him in the art of bayweaving and pappering and will lodge and feed him and indemnify the parishioners from any charges and at the end of the term provide double apparel etc Thos Appleton witnesses Jn Unwin Sam Burton justices of the peace Rich Wale Robt Tweed
