in the name of god amen the 8.8.1638 etc. I Jn Abbote of Colne Wake in the county of Essex and diocese of London blacksmith being in my good and perfect remembrance thanks be unto almighty god therefore do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following first and principally I commit my soul into the hands of almighty god my creator redeemer and sanctifier and my body to the earth to be decently buried according to my degree item I do give unto Thos Abbot of St Osiths my kinsman and to his son Wm after the death of the said Thos the father and to his heirs forever all my freehold lands in Aldham in the said county of Essex and all my freehold tenement with the appurtenances in Colchester situate near Sheeregate item I do give unto the two children of the said Thos my kinsman 40s apiece to be paid to their father for their use within one year after my decease and if either of them die before the said year be come about the other that shall over live to have that portion item I do give to Jn Abbot son of my kinsman Robt Abbot blacksmith and to his heirs and assigns my freehold tenement with the appurtenances in White Colne and also my copyhold lands thereto belonging or therewith now used or heretofore at any time used or enjoyed and if it happen that Grace Diglet widow who did lately dwell in the said house or Jn Diglet her son or any for them shall pay in all such monies as I have laid out for and about the said house and lands and which is or shall be due to me mine heirs executors administrators or assigns for the same and agree with mine executors paying unto them so much as they have cost me and stand me in then my will and meaning is that that money shall be taken by Robt Abbot father of the said Jn so paid by them and shall be employed and laid out by him to purchase an house and land for the said Jn and his heirs forever item I do give unto the said Robt Abbot my kinsman my copyhold tenement with the appurtenances wherein I dwell being in Colne Wake aforesaid during the term of his natural life and after his decease I give it to Robt Abbot his son and to his heirs forever item I do give unto Robt Abbot son of my said kinsman Robt Abbot blacksmith and to his heirs forever my copyhold tenement and lands with appurtenances in Colne Engaine in the said county item I do give unto Thos Abbot son of the said Robt 20li of lawful money of England to be paid into his father's hands within one year after my decease for the use and benefit of the said son of the same to be paid by the said Robt the father unto his said son at his age of 21yr the father upon the receiving thereof to give a discharge for the same item I do give unto Rose Abbot daughter of the said Robt 10li of lawful money to be paid unto her father for her use within one year after my decease and he to pay it her at her age of 18yr and if she do die before the said time the same to be equally divided between her brothers that shall be alive item I do give unto the wife of the said Robt my kinsman 20s of lawful money of England to be paid her within one year after my decease item I do give unto Robt Abbot of Much Tey my kinsman during his natural life my copyhold tenement and lands with the appurtenances in Sible Hedingham and I do give the said copyhold tenement and lands after the decease of the said Robt unto his eldest son and to his heirs forever item I do give unto the said Robt Abbot my kinsman 20li of lawful money of England to be paid him within one year after my decease item I do give to his children 20li of lawful money to be paid to their father within one year after my decease for their use and if any of them die before the said year be expired the others that shall be alive to have the same divided between them and their father to pay them their several portions at their several ages of 18yr the said 20li to be equally divided amongst them and the father to give a discharge upon the receipt of the said money unto my executors for the same item I do give unto Geo Abbot my kinsman of Mersey 20li of lawful money of England to be paid him within one year after my decease item I do give unto the wife of the said Geo 40s to be paid her within one year after my decease item I do give unto Jn Abbot son of my kinsman Thos Abbot deceased and to his heirs my copyhold tenement with the appurtenances in Dedham in the said county item I do give unto Thos Abbot his brother all my leases and term of years of or in any lands or tenements in Sible Hedingham aforesaid and my will and meaning is that Edm Turner of Cappell schoolmaster shall be their guardian until they shall successively attain their several ages of 18yr upon an account to be given and I do give unto the said Edm 40s for his pains therein and if the said Thos Abbot die without heirs then those my said leases and lands or tenements before bequeathed to him I give to his brother Jn Abbot aforesaid and his heirs forever item I do give unto mark Jn Abbot (inserted) Jn Abbot the son of my kinsman Jn Abbot of Marks Tey deceased and to his heirs my copyhold lands and tenements with the appurtenances in Marks Tey aforesaid item I do give unto the said Jn Abbot 5li of lawful money of England to be paid unto Tim Abbot my kinsman uncle of the said Jn within half a year after my decease the said Tim to pay it unto him at his age of 20yr item I do give unto the lame daughter of my brother Rich Abbott 10li and to his other daughters 7li apiece of lawful money of England to be paid them within one year after my decease and if any of them happen to die before her or their parts be paid them the survivors to have their or her part equally divided between them item I do give unto Kath Munt my kinswoman 8li of lawful money of England and to her sister Susanna 40s to be paid them within one year after my decease item I do give to the only daughter of my kinsman Thos Abbot deceased 10li of lawful money of England to be paid her at her age of 20yr the same to be paid into the hands of Thos Webbe her uncle with whom she dwells until she shall attain unto her said age he allowing her something in consideration of the same the same to be paid unto her said uncle for her use within one year after my decease and to put in surety unto mine executors for the same item I do give unto my eldest kinswoman the tailor's wife dwelling at St Edmund Bury 6li item I do give to her sister being a singlewoman dwelling likewise at Bury 4li of lawful money of England to be paid them within a year after my decease and if she that is now the singlewoman die before the time be come she should receive it then the same to be paid unto her sister item I do give unto Alice Alders daughter of my kinsman Dan Alders deceased 40s of lawful money to be paid her with one month after my decease item I do give unto the children of Joshua Alders of Haverell 5li of lawful money of England to be equally divided amongst them at their ages of 20yr within six months after my decease their father to take it and give a discharge for it for the use and behoof of the said children and if either of them die before the said time the other alive to have their part item I do give unto the three sons of my kinsman Jn Alders of Haverell 6li to be equally divided amongst them within one year after my decease if any do die before the said time the survivors to have their or his part and their father to take it and give a discharge for the same item I do give to my kinsman Thos Alders blacksmith 5li to be paid him within a year after my decease and 10li of lawful money amongst his children part and part like to be paid them at their ages of 20yr and their father to take their portion of mine executors within a year after my decease and if either of them die afore the survivors to have their portion item I do give to their sister dwelling about Haverell 5li within a year after my death item I give to his sister dwelling at Tey 5li within one year after my decease item I do give unto Dan Alders son of my kinsman Jas Alders deceased 20li of lawful money of England item I do give to his sister Mary Alders 4li to be paid them within one year after my death and if either of them die afore the said year the survivor to have that portion item I do give unto the children of Rich Evans 9li of lawful money to be paid unto their fathers hand for the use of his children within one year after my decease he giving a discharge to my executors and their father to pay the same to his children part and part alike at their several ages of 20yr item I do give unto the children of Wm Evans my kinsman 9li of lawful money to be paid to their father likewise within one year after my decease for his children's use and he to pay it them by equal portions at their several ages of 20yr item I do give unto the children of my kinsman Jn Evans 6li to be paid to their father within one year after my decease for his children's use and he to pay it to his child or children at his age of 20yr item I give to the sister of Jn Evans 3li of lawful money of England to be paid her within a year after my decease item I do give unto Thos Pickeover who was sometime mine apprentice 40s within six months after my decease item I do give unto my kinswoman Rebecca Webb of Maitland 5li of lawful money of England within one year after my decease item I do give unto the daughter of Geo Barrel of Colchester deceased 7li to be paid her within a year after my decease item I do give unto the two sons of the said Geo 5li of like lawful money of England to be equally divided amongst them within a year after my death and if either of them die the survivor to have that portion item I do give unto Robt Abbot my kinsman blacksmith during the term of his natural life all my tools and shop things belonging to the occupation of a blacksmith and after his decease to his two sons Jn and Robt to be equally divided betwixt them item I do give unto the widow Alders of Much Tey wife of Dan Alders deceased 20s to be paid her within one week after my decease mark Jn Abbot(inserted) item I do give unto the children of Paul Raynham of Chappell butcher 30li which the said Paul by his obligation wherein he is bound unto me is to pay to be equally divided amongst all his children and if any of them die the other that are alive to have their part item I give unto Jn Raynham son of the said Paul 28li of lawful money which the said Paul his father oweth me to be paid him at his age of 18yr item I give unto Mary Greene daughter of the said Paul the sum of 5li of lawful money of England to be paid her within six months after my decease item I do give unto Martha daughter of the said Paul lately married 7li of like lawful money of England to be paid her within one year after my decease item my will and meaning is that Jn Raynham son of Paul Raynham of Chappell butcher shall enter upon and enjoy the house with the appurtenances situate in Chappell Street wherein the said Paul dwelleth which said house is forfeit into my hands by the said Paul Raynham for want of payment of his rent unto me for the same (there is now a gap in the sheet of paper) item I do give unto my brother Rich of Dedham my kinsman Robt Abbott the blacksmith Geo Abbot of Mersey and Robt Abbot of Much Tey all my clothes and apparel to be equally divided amongst them item I do give unto my goddaughter Marge Knight 40s item I do give unto Jeff Weston of Chappell 40s of like lawful money of England the said legacy to be pa id them within half a year after my decease item I do give unto Jn Alcock my kinsman Robt Abbot's apprentice 20s of lawful money of England item I do give unto the minister that shall preach at my burial and bury me 10s item I do give unto the poor people of Colne Wake 40s to buy the poorest sort of children of the said parish apparel at the discretion of mine executors within a month after my decease item I do give to twenty of the poorest families of the said parish 20s item my will and meaning is that mine executors shall bestow at my burial 9li and further my will and meaning is that no advantage or forfeit shall be taken of any houses lands leases or specialties which shall be forfeited at the time of my death so as the same parties which the same shall continue do pay that which shall be due item it is my will and meaning that the overplus of my monies my legacies and other charges about my will deducted paid and defrayed shall be equally be divided between the three sons of Robt Abbot my kinsman blacksmith the two sons of Robt Abbot of Much Tey the two sons of Thos Abbot of Mile End deceased the son of Thos Abbot of St Osith Geo Abbot's son of Mersey and Jn Abbot's son of Marks Tey the parents of the said children if any of the children be not of age to take the said money and give and discharge unto my executors item I do ordain and make Robt Abbot aforesaid blacksmith my kinsman and Rich Keeme of Much Tey my executors of this my last will and testament and I do give unto the said Rich Keeme 5li of lawful money of England that he may join with the said Robt Abbot in the executorship of this my last will to be an assistant and helper to take in and pay out monies as they shall come to be due according to my mind and meaning that as it is my intent and will that no prejudice nor damage should come to him the said Rich his heirs or assigns or executors by means or reason of the said his executorship so I will that my kinsman Robt Abbot mine other executor his heirs executors and assigns shall take and receive all such profits and commodities as shall anyway arise and grow due by virtue means of this my last testament and of the executorship of the same item I do make and appoint Edm Turner of Chappell supervisor of this my last will and testament to whom I give 5li of lawful money to do his best endeavour so far as in him lieth to see that this my last will and testament may be truly performed and executed item I do give to the witnesses to this my last testament 5s between them in witness that this is my last will and testament I have to either of these three sheets of paper wherein my will is contained signed my mark and to this last sheet hereof subscribed my hand and set my seal and acknowledged to be my last will and testament in the presence of these whose names are under written item I do give unto Isaac Garret one of my witnesses 2s to be paid for his dinner sealed signed and acknowledged as his act and deed in the
