in the name of god I Sam Burton of Earls Colne in the county of Essex (chandler) being sick in body but of perfect mind and memory blessed be god hereby make and declare this my last will and testament and first I bequeath my soul into the hands of god that gave it hoping and trusting for salvation through the blood of jesus christ my saviour my body I leave to the earth to be disposed of at the discretion of my executrix hereafter named as for my worldly goods and estate which god of his goodness hath intrusted me with I give and dispose thereof as followeth and first my mind and will is that all such debts as I truly owe to any person or person whatsoever be truly and justly paid by my executrix item I give and bequeath unto my loving wife Ann all that my copyhold messuage and tenement wherein I now dwell together with the yards backside and all and every the appurtenances thereunto belonging for and during the term of her natural life and after her decease I give the same unto my son Sam and his heirs forever together with those utensils which belong unto my trade of a chandler also I give unto my said wife for her life my freehold messuage or tenement called the Bell in Earls Colne aforesaid together with all and every outhouses backside and appurtenances thereunto belonging and after her decease I give and bequeath the same and every part thereof unto my son Jn and his heirs forever but if in case my son Jn shall happen to die without issue before he attains the age of 21yr then I give the same unto my son Isaac and his heirs forever item I give unto my wife for her natural life those my copyhold messuages or tenements together with the yards and every the appurtenances thereunto belonging now in the possession of Esdras Partree (may be Esdras Partree) or his assigns and after her death I give the same to my son Wm and his heirs forever and in case he shall die before his age of 21yr then I give the same unto my son Dan and his heirs forever item I give unto my said loving wife and to her heirs forever all those my copyhold lands in Colne Engaine held of the manor of Goldingtons together with the barn stable and appurtenances thereon and thereunto belonging and I desire my said loving wife to have a motherly care of all my younger children to bring them up in the fear of god and give them education according to her estate and to do for every of them according as in her discretion she shall think fit and lastly I give all the rest and residue of my estate debts goods and chattels whatsoever in stock or otherwise not before bequeathed unto Ann my said loving wife whom I do hereby make nominate and appoint my full and sole executrix of this my last will and testament revoking all former or other wills by me made not doubting in the least of my said wife her punctual performance hereof witness my land and seal the 8.10.1659 sealed delivered and published as the last will and testament of the said Sam Burton in the presence of G Cressener mark Dorothy Hatch Eliz Payne (may be Eliz Payne) Sam Burton
