whereas at a court held for the said manor 3.1.1637 Grace Champney the wife of Steph Champney was admitted tenant for her life to a customary tenement or cottage and garden adjoining with the appurtenances in Holt St alias Brooke St the remainder thereof to the said Steph Champney her husband and to his heirs and whereas at a court held for the said manor 8.1.1645 it was presented by the homage that the said Steph since the then last court did surrender into the hands of the lord of the said manor by the hands of Jn Read the younger in place of the bailiff and in the presence of Jn Reade the elder and Robt Finch two customary tenants of the said manor etc the said premises amongst other things to the use of his last will and testament and now at this court came Rose Man the daughter of Clem Mann and of Sarah his wife and showed forth the last will and testament of the said Steph bearing the date 11.4.1644 the tenor whereof concerning the premises in these words item I give and bequeath to Grace Champney my wife all that my tenement and garden now and lately purchased of Thos Harlakenden gentleman situate in Holt St also Brook St during the term of her natural life and after her decease I give the same to Rose Mann the daughter of Clem Mann and of Sarah his wife and to her heirs forever as by the said will duly proved it doth and may appear which said Grace Champney is yet living and thereupon the said Rose Mann prayed to be admitted tenant to the said remainder of the said messuage and garden with the appurtenances to whom the lord of the said manor by his said steward did grant and deliver thereof seisin by the rod to have and to hold the said remainder of the said messuage and garden with the appurtenances to the said Rose Mann her heirs and assigns of the lord by the rod at the will of the lord according to the custom of the said manor by the rents and services due and of right accustomed when the said remainder shall come in possession and she gave to the lord her fine and afterwards in the same court the said Rose Mann surrendered into the hands of the lord of the said manor by the hands of his said steward the said remainder of the said messuage and premises and all her estate and interest in the same to the use of Giles Crow his heirs and assigns who being present in court prayed to be admitted tenant to the same to whom the lord of the said manor by his said steward did grant and deliver thereof seisin by the rod to have and to hold the same to the said Giles Crow his heirs and assigns of the lord by the rod at the will of the lord according to the custom of the said manor by the rents services and customs due etc when the said remainder shall come in possession and he gave to the lord for his fine
