(in latin) james by the grace of god king of England Scotland France and Ireland defender of the faith etc to whom these presents lawfully come greeting whereof enrollment of an indenture between Edw de Veer earl of Oxon on the one part and Roger Harlakenden esq on the other part made lies memorandum under the same indenture in the close rolls (rotulis claus roll or register enclosed) in chancery lawfully enrolled and moreover there of record do remain in these words (changes to english) this indenture made the 15.9.26Eliz1 between the right honourable Edw de Veer earl of Oxenford lord great chamberlayne of England vicount Bulbeck and lord of Badlemer and Escales of the one part and Roger Harlakenden of Earls Colne in the county of Essex esq of the other part witnesseth that the said Edw de Veer earl of Oxenford for and in consideration of the sum of 500li of lawful english money to him the said earl well and truly beforehand contented and paid by the said Roger whereof he doth by these presents clearly acquit and discharge the said Roger his heirs executors and administrators forever hath bargained and sold given and granted and by these presents doth bargain and sell give and grant unto the said Roger Harlakenden his heirs and assigns all that the manor lordship or seignory of Earls Colne in the county of Essex with all the demesne lands and tenements and the reversions of the same as well in the hands of any tenant or farmers as of the customary tenants and copyholders of the same manor lordship or seignory and all and singular meadows feedings pastures woods underwoods rents reversions services mills knights fees wards marriages releases escheats commons waters wastes warrens waifs strays felons goods and chattels liberties franchises courts leet prerequisites of courts advowsons and all other rights and hereditaments with their appurtenances whatsoever in Earls Colne aforesaid and or elsewhere in the county of Essex to the said manor lordship or seignory belonging or appurtaining or as member or parcel of the same manor lordship or seignory known reputed or taken and also all evidences writings muniments rentals court rolls and terriers of or touching the said manor lordship or seignory or any way appurtaining to the same to have and to hold the said manor lordship or seignory and all the demesne lands and services thereof and all and singular the premises to the said Roger Harlakenden his heirs and assigns forever to the only proper use and behoof of the said Roger his heirs and assigns forever without any condition or limitation and the said Edw de Veer earl of Oxenforde doth for him his heirs executors and administrators co venant promise and grant to and with the said Roger Harlakenden his heirs and assigns that he the said earl is lawful owner of the said manor lordship or seignory of Earls Colne and of all other the afore granted premises and that he is lawfully seised of a perfect and absolute estate of inheritance in fee simple without and condition limitation use or defeasance of all that fore granted premises with their appurtenances and that he hath full power and lawful warranty to bargain sell give and grant the same unto the said Roger Harlakenden his heirs and assigns and the said earl doth further covenant promise and grant for him his heirs executors and administrators to and with the said Roger Harlakenden his heirs and assigns that the said manor lordship or seignory with all and singular the appurtenances and all other the above granted premises be fully and clearly acquitted or otherwise sufficiently discharged or saved harmless and so forever shall continue of and from all former bargains sales gifts feoffments grants entails conditions jointures dowers leases rents statutes recognizances executions intrusions extents other encumbrances whatsoever had made or done by the said earl or any his ancestors or any other person or persons whatsoever and the said Edw de Veer earl of Oxenforde doth further for him his heirs executors and administrators covenant and grant to and with the said Roger Harlakenden his heirs and assigns that he before the 26.11.next ensuing shall levy and acknowledge a fine to the said Roger according to the order of the law of the said manor lordship or seignory and of all other the premises in the county of Essex and in the said fine shall knowledge the said premises to be the right of the said Roger as those which the said Roger hath the gift of the said earl the same by the said fine shall remise and quitclaim to the said Roger his heirs and assigns forever and the said parties do agree by these presents that the said fine shall be to the only use of the said Roger and his heirs forever and further the said Edw de Veer earl of Oxenford doth for him his heirs executors and administrators covenant promise and grant to and with the said Roger Harlakenden his heirs and assigns for the more perfect and full assuring conveying and suremaking of the said manor lordship or seignory and all other the premises to the said Roger his heirs and assigns to his and their uses and behoof that he the said earl his heirs and all other rightfully claiming pretending or challenging any right title estate or interest in or to the premises or any part of them by from under or after the said earl shall at all times hereafter upon reasonable request at the cost and charges in law of the said Roger his heirs or assigns further do and suffer or cause to be suffered and done all such further acts things and devises as shall be reasonably desired or advised by the said Roger his heirs or assigns or by his or their learned counsel in the law to the use and behoof of the said Roger and of his heirs and assigns and the said earl of Oxenforde doth further for him his heirs executors and administrators covenant and grant to and with the said Roger Harlakenden his heirs executors and administrators that he the said earl his heirs executors or administrators shall before the feast of st batholomew next ensuing give and deliver or cause to be given and delivered unto the said Roger his heirs and assigns all manner of evidences writings muniments escripts terriers rentals and court rolls which he hath in his custody or may come by without suit in law which concern the said manor seignory or lordship of Earls Colne or any the afore granted premises uncancelled and undefaced in witness whereof the aforesaid parties to these presents have interchageably set their hands and seal the day and year first above written (rest reverts to latin) and memorandum that 16.11. the year above written the aforementioned Edw earl of Oxford came before the lady queen in her chancery and acknowledged the indenture aforesaid and all and singular in the same contained and specified in form abovesaid sworn 21.11.27Eliz1 we moreover according to the request of Rich Harlakenden esq did draw up a copy by means of these presents of
