to all christian faithful to whom this present writing may come from Wm Bernarde of White Colne in the county of Essex yeoman son and heir of Wm Bernarde late of White Colne aforesaid yeoman deceased and Marge sometime his wife and before wife of Jn Barrette late of Earls Colne in the said county of Essex yeoman deceased eternal greetings know that I the aforementioned Wm Bernarde the son for and in consideration of 26li of good and lawful money of England to me in hand paid by a certain Edw Cressener of Earls Colne aforesaid gentleman of which his 26li I acknowledge myself to be paid and satisfied by the same Edw Cressener his heirs executors and administrators from there and of anywhere then parcel wholly to be acquitted and exonerated forever by these presents give grant release enfeoff and by this my present writing confirm to the same Edw Cressener and his heirs one small croft of land called Sorells containing 1a1r or more with its appurtenances being as it were in the form of a triangle in Earls Colne aforesaid according as there enclosed whereof for instance the one and greater part of the croft is situate and abutting upon the king's highway leading from Earls Colne towards Coggishale the other part thereof abutting upon a field sometime of the earl of Oxon and now of Rich Harlakenden esq called Great Rycrofte and the third part or head of the said croft abuts upon a field sometime of the said earl of Oxon and now of the said Rich Harlakenden called Little Ryfield now in the tenure of Jn Churche gentleman by copy of court roll in part and upon on piece of land sometime of the prior and convent of Colne and now of the said Rich Harlakenden now in the tenure of the said Jn Churche by copy of court roll in part on the north side according as by metes and bounds it may be fully bound and proved which croft of land descended to me by right of inheritance from and after the death of the said Marge of right and as the said Marge late held it to her and her heirs from the gift and legacy of the said Jn Barrette sometime her husband deceased according as by the testament and last will of the said Jn Barrette in writing made and declared bearing date 23.8.1582 more plainly it may appear to have and to hold all the aforesaid croft of land with the appurtenances to the same Edw Cressener his heirs and assigns to the sole and proper work and use of Edw Cressener himself his heirs and assigns forever of chief lords fee there by rents and services then previously owed and of right accustomed and I the before mentioned Wm Bernarde an d my heirs shall warrant and forever defend all the aforesaid croft of land with its appurtenances to the aforementioned Edw Cressener and his heirs to the work and use of Edw Cressener himself and his heirs against me and my heirs by these presents in witness whereof to this present writing I set my seal given 20.10.1607 Wm Bernard sealed and released and full and peaceful possession sciatus et scia tenor with written openly quietly and peacefully take give and release the day and year within written in the presence of witnesses whose names shall be underwritten and this name Edw written above erasure in seven several places Jn Parker Jn Persan Chas Huntisman Robt Cobbe
