indenture made 29.8.1696 witnesseth that Sam Finch and Jn Pratt churchwardens of the parish of Earls Colne and Robt Potter and Hen Hatch overseers of the poor and by the consent of his majesties justices of the peace whose names are subscribed have put and placed Jn Choate a poor child of the parish apprentice to Jas Reynolds of Colchester weaver with him to dwell and serve from this date until the age of twenty four years being now about 16yrs during which term shall serve his master honestly etc and Jas Reynolds covenants to teach him the art and mystery of a bay and say weaver and all things appertaining to the same and shall keep him in meat and drink etc and keep the inhabitants of Earls Colne indemnified from any charges and at the end of the term to give the apprentice two suits of apparel one for work days the other for holy days mark Jas Reynolds Jn Eldred Ralph Creffield justices of the peace Sam Smith Thos Sadler
