at this court it was shown by the homage that Sam Newton who took for himself and his heirs one cottage and curtilage with appurtenances late of Wm Sprigge at a court here held 24.4.1622 after the last court viz 21.12. surrendered into the hands of the lord by the hands of Jn Reade instead of the bailiff in the presence of Jn Brewer and Thos Fisher two customary tenants of the aforesaid manor the same testifying according to the custom of the aforesaid manor the aforesaid cottage now divided into two tenements and the curtilage with gardens and orchards with appurtenances to the use and behoof of Thos Ruggles of Earls Colne baker and Edith his wife and their heirs and assigns forever who present here in court humbly sought admittance to whom the lord by the aforesaid steward granted and delivered thereof seisin by the rod to have and to hold the aforesaid cottage and other premises with appurtenances to the aforesaid Thos and Edith and their heirs forever from the lord by the rod at the will of the lord etc by the rents etc and they gave to the lord for a fine etc and afterwards in this same court and the court sitting came the aforesaid Thos Ruggles and Edith his wife Edith herself solely and secretly examined by the steward of the court as is the custom and surrendered into the hands of the lord by the hands of the aforesaid steward the aforesaid cottage and other premises with appurtenances to the use and behoof of the said Thos for his lifetime and after his decease to the use of the said Edith and the heirs of her body legitimately procreated by the said Thos Ruggles and in default of such issue to the use of the rightful heirs of the said Edith forever upon which the aforesaid Thos and Edith humbly sought admittance to whom the lord by the aforesaid steward granted and delivered thereof seisin by the rod to have and to hold the aforesaid cottage and other premises with appurtenances to the aforesaid Thos for his lifetime and after his decease to the aforesaid Edith and the heirs of her body legitimately procreated by the said Thos the remainder thereof to the rightful heirs of the said Edith forever from the lord by the rod at the will of the lord according to the custom of the aforesaid manor by the rents services and customs thereunto be longing and by right accustomed and they gave to the lord for a fine and made fealty and were admitted thereof tenants of the lord
