whereas at a court here held wednesday 13.3.19Eliz1 Robt Carter was admitted tenant of the lord for himself and his heirs to one cottage with garden adjoining and appurtenances called Cloviers and also at the last court here held viz friday being 5.10.1610 it was shown by the homage that the said Robt Carter before that same court had surrendered the said cottage with appurtenances into the hands of the lord by the hands of Wm Dashe instead of the bailiff in the presence of Robt Rookes senior and Peter Gilotte customary tenants of this manor the same testifying according to the custom of the said manor to the use and behoof of his last will and testament and that the said Robt Carter at that time was living in full health now at this court it is shown by the homage that the said Robt Carter after the last court died upon which now to this court came Joan Carter widow of the said Robt Carter and showed here in full court the testament of the said Robt Carter proved under the seal of the ordinary the tenor of which concerning the premises in the following words viz item I give and bequeath unto Joan my wife my cottage and garden called Cloviers with the appurtenances situate and being in Earls Colne aforesaid wherein I now dwell during the term of her natural life upon condition that she shall bring up Robt Carter and Mary Carter my grandchildren until such time as they shall attain to their several ages of twenty one years and after her decease I give and bequeath the said cottage and garden with the appurtenances unto the said Robt Carter and his heirs forever and upon this the said Joan sought for herself admittance thereof according to the tenor and effect of the said surrender to whom the lord by his said steward granted thereof seisin to have to the same said Joan and her assigns for and during the whole term of her natural life according the tenor and effect of the conditions and surrender of the said remainder thereof as above to hold from the lord by the rod at the will of the lord according to the custom of the said manor by the rents and services thereunto belonging and by right accustomed and she gave to the lord her fine as is shown in the margin     and made fealty and was admitted thereof tenant of the lord
