in the name of god amen the 3.6.1640 etc I Jn Prentis of Earls Colne in the county of Essex and diocese of London yeoman being sick and weak in body but of good and perfect mind and remembrance I do give god thanks therefore I do make ordain and declare this my present last will and testament in manner and form following and I do hereby utterly renounce and revoke all former will or wills by me heretofore made whatsoever first and principally I commend my soul into the merciful hands of almighty god the father my creator and of jesus christ his son my only saviour and of the holy ghost my only sanctifier comforter and preserver with an assured faith and steadfast hope to have the free pardon and forgiveness of all my sins and my body to the earth from whence it was taken to be decently buried in christian sepulchre according to my degree in sure and certain hope of resurrection of the same to eternal salvation and blessedness amongst the elect and holy saints of god in and through the only merits and passion of jesus christ my only savi our and redeemer and for that part and portion of worldly goods wherewith it hath pleased god out of his free favour and love to endue me withal imprimis I give and bequeath unto Ellen the now wife of Hen Ames my sister all my messuage or tenement called Workmans with all the houses edifices buildings barns stables yards gardens orchards and also all my lands and meadow both freehold and copyhold called Burrowes Land and Burrowes Meadow and also all those my other lands which were sometimes the lands of Jas Pennocke containing by estimation 7a be it more or less with all and singular their and every of their appurtenances to the same belonging or by whatsoever name or names the same now or heretofore hath been called situate lying or being in Earls Colne aforesaid to have and to hold to the said Ellen my sister and to the heirs of her body lawfully begotten or to be begotten forever and for want of such issue of her body lawfully begotten as aforesaid then I do give and bequeath my aforesaid messuage lands tenement and hereditaments whatsoever before above mentioned unto Abrm the son of Abrm Markham and Alice his wife my aunt's son and to his heirs forever my will and meaning is that if it shall happen that the said Ellin my sister shall die without issue of her body lawfully begotten as aforesaid then I do give and bequeath unto Hen Ames my brother in law my sister Ellin's husband all that my aforesaid messuage or tenements before above mentioned and all my lands and meadows aforesaid for and during the full and whole term of twelve years next ensuing after my decease upon these conditions hereafter in these presents mentioned viz that is to say that he the said Hen his heirs or assigns shall keep maintain and sustain all my aforesaid messuage tenement and houses in needful and necessary reparations and shall not do nor suffer to be done nor commit any wilful strip or waste upon the said premises or any part or parcel thereof and also upon condition that the said Hen Ames and Ellin his wife my brother in law and sister his wife their heirs or assigns shall permit and suffer Clem Turner and Sisly his wife my grandfather and grandmother to have the two low rooms and the two chambers over them and a way through the entry and free liberty of ingress egress and regress into the yards and to the pond for and during the term or longest liver of them both viz that is to say the four rooms next unto the dwelling house of mr Jn Church and also upon condition that the said Hen Ames his heirs or assigns shall pay all my debts and legacies and perform all such covenants and conditions whatsoever herein mentioned and expressed item I give and bequeath unto Clem Turner and Sisly his wife my grandfather and grandmother the sum of 3li of lawful english money per annum during the full and whole term of the longest liver of them both to be paid by mine executor every quarter by even and equal portions out of my aforesaid messuage houses lands and tenements item I give and bequeath unto Eliz the now wife of Barth Clarke my mother the sum of 3li of lawful english money every year during the natural life of the said Barth in consideration and upon condition that the said Barth nor Eliz shall not demand any third out of my aforesaid messuage houses lands or tenement provided always that if it shall happen that the said Barth shall die or depart out of this life before the said Eliz my mother then after his decease I do give and bequeath unto the said Eliz my mother the sum of =li a year every year to be paid by my executor during her natural life out of my aforesaid messuage houses lands or tenement item I give and bequeath unto Abrm the son of Abrm Marke my aunt Alice's son the sum of 10li of lawful english money and interest for the same to be paid unto the said Abrm or his heirs at the age or ages of 21yr out of my aforesaid houses lands or tenements by mine executor item I give and bequeath unto Francis Turner my uncle the sum of 10li of lawful english money to be paid unto him within two years next ensuing after my decease by mine executor item I give and bequeath unto Jn Clarke my brother the sum of 10li of lawful english money to be paid unto him with interest for the same at the age of 21yr by my executor item I give and bequeath unto Eliz Clarke and Joan Clarke my two sisters the sum of 5li apiece of good and lawful money of England and interest for the same to be paid unto them at their several ages of 21yr by mine executor item I give and bequeath unto Xoph Turner my uncle's son 20s of lawful english money item I give and bequeath unto Roger Turner Thos Turner and Clem Turner my uncle Thos his sons the sum of 10s apiece to be paid unto every one of them within two years after my death to buy either of them a sheep for a stock item I give and bequeath unto Joan Markham and Eliz Markham my aunt Alice's two daughters the sum of 10s of lawful english money to be paid to them within two years next after my decease to buy each of them a sheep item I give and bequeath unto item I item I give and bequeath unto (sic) Jn Gaunt and to Judith the daughter of Edw Graunte and to Jn the son of Wm Ward my three godchildren the sum of 6s8d apiece of lawful english money to be paid by my executor item I give and bequeath unto the poor people of the said parish 20s of lawful english money to be paid at the day of my burial by my executor all the rest of my goods whatsoever or wheresoever unbequeathed my debts and legacies being paid and my body being decently buried I do give and bequeath unto Hen Ames my sister Ellin's husband whom I do make and ordain to be my only and sole executor of this my last will and testament desiring him to perform and fulfil the same according to my true intent and meaning herein mentioned in witness whereof I the said Jn Prentis have hereunto put my
